Abstract
In a representative survey of the Dutch population we found that people with low levels of education and disabled people are using the Internet for more hours a day in their spare time than higher educated and employed populations. To explain this finding, we investigated what these people are doing online. The first contribution is a theoretically validated cluster of Internet usage types: information, news, personal development, social interaction, leisure, commercial transaction and gaming. The second contribution is that, based on this classification, we were able to identify a number of usage differences, including those demonstrated by people with different gender, age, education and Internet experience, that are often observed in digital divide literature. The general conclusion is that when the Internet matures, it will increasingly reflect known social, economic and cultural relationships of the offline world, including inequalities.

Abstract
This article is about an unexplored area of information and communication technology (ICT) use in organizations related to the assumed productivity gains by the use of ICTs. On the one hand, we focus on the losses of labor time that are caused by malfunctioning hardware or non-functional software, and on the other hand, we focus on the labor time losses that are caused by a lack of skills to maximize ICT. To estimate these losses, we conducted a large-scale survey among the Dutch workforce. The respondents were presented scenarios, and then they were asked to assess the loss of labor time. When working with ICTs, malfunctions and skill insufficiencies lead to a loss in labor time of 7.5%. Organizations should account for these losses when calculating ICT expenditures of hardware, software, energy and support. The losses increase with decreasing educational attainment level. However, age does not contribute to the total average losses. In addressing experienced problems, the role of co-workers is more significant than the formally organized means by the organization. In addition, workers highly underestimate the effects of ICT-related training. The results indicate that organizations do not realize that higher levels of productivity gains are attainable.

Tijdens de nieuwjaarsbijeenkomst op 7 januari 2013 reikte Anne Flierman (voorzitter CvB van de Universiteit Twente) na de nieuwjaarstoespraak de UT in de Media Prijs 2012 uit. De eerste prijs ging uit naar Alexander van Deursen van de faculteit Gedragswetenschappen. Met zijn onderzoek naar het verprutsen van werktijd door ICT onkunde behaalde hij in maart 2012 massaal de media. Het onderzoek verscheen in veel grote (online) kranten, hij was veelvuldig op de radio bij de grote stations en behaalde met een uitgebreide reportage het NOS journaal gefilmd op de UT.

Management summary

The average Dutch employee loses 7.6% of productive time due to poor IT resources or inadequate personal computer skills. To date, this problem seems to have escaped the attention of both employees and managers. Potential solutions include appropriate training, a more prominent role for the helpdesk, and better support from informal networks such as colleagues, whereupon the productivity losses can be reduced.

Digitale kloof tussen bevolkingsgroepen verschuift van toegang naar gebruik van internet

Den Haag, 15 november 2012 – Zowel thuis als op het werk, internet neemt een steeds prominentere plek in het dagelijks leven van de Nederlander in. Bijna alle bevolkingsgroepen besteden er meer tijd aan en profiteren ervan, maar vooral jongeren en hoogopgeleiden hebben het meeste profijt van waardoor een nieuwe digitale kloof dreigt. Geen kloof tussen mensen die online zijn of niet, maar een kloof tussen mensen die profiteren van internet of niet. Dit blijkt uit het Trendrapport internetgebruik 2012 van de Universiteit Twente in opdracht van Digivaardig & Digiveilig. 96% van de Nederlanders, de hoogste score in Europa, beschikt nu thuis over fysieke toegang tot internet. 87% gebruikt internet dagelijks. Behalve thuis, op het werk of op school ook steeds meer onderweg. In een jaar tijd is de toegang tot mobiel internet via smartphones gestegen van 31 tot 42% en via de tablets van 10 tot 27%. Gemiddeld zit de Nederlander op een werkdag (incl. vrije tijd) in 2012 4 uur en 48 minuten op internet. Op een vrije dag 4 uur en 18 minuten. De onderzoekers, Dr. Ing. Alexander van Deursen en prof. Dr. Jan van Dijk: “Iedere Nederlander kan bijna altijd en overal online zijn. Gebruik van internet via laptops, tablets en smartphones blijft groeien en biedt ontzettend veel voordelen. Vooral hoger opgeleiden profiteren optimaal van de vele mogelijkheden van het internet.” De uitkomsten worden vandaag, tijdens het ECP Jaarcongres in Scheveningen gepresenteerd.

Alexander van Deursen van de Universiteit Twente: “Op werkdagen maken hoogopgeleiden veel meer gebruik van het internet dan laagopgeleiden. Op vrije dagen is precies het omgekeerde het geval. Verschillen die te maken hebben met de soort internetconsumptie die men tot zich neemt. Hoogopgeleiden kiezen voor informatie, educatie en carrière, laagopgeleiden richten zich vooral op vermaak zoals gamen, chatten en filmpjes kijken. Mensen met een hogere opleiding werken ook meer thuis via internet, 21% minimaal eenmaal per week. Slechts 6% van de Nederlanders met een lagere opleiding doet dit.”
